A Little History About these Four American Mastiffs
And The Berger Family
|
American Mastiffs are registered with the Continental Kennel Club (C.K.C.)
This is Brutus, our first American Mastiff. I read about the English Mastiff and
was impressed by the temperament of the breed. I did not want to deal with the
drooling problem the breed has. When I read about the American Mastiff with the
same quality of disposition I knew I wanted one for our family. We picked Brutus
out of a litter of three puppies from Flying W Farms in Piketon, Ohio where this
breed was developed. I have never in my life seen a puppy that was this well
mannered. Brutus was from the start, and this began the beginning of my love and
respect for the American Mastiff. Brutus is now 6 years old and still very much
a gentleman; I will never again own another breed. When they say “WHAT THE LION
IS TO THE CAT, THE MASTIFF IS TO THE DOG! THE NOBLEST OF THE FAMILY, HE STANDS
ALONE, AND ALL OTHERS SINK BEFORE HIM!!!!! (Britannica 1800)
From the time I got to know Brutus I knew I wanted to continue this breed and help
make it a household name. No family should be with out one, although Brutus does
drool when he drinks water he can also “get his towel” and wipe his own mouth when
he is done. So with Brutus becoming a solid member of the family, we decided to get
Ruby. Ruby is equally enjoyable; here she is at 18 months old and around 110 pounds.
Our plans are to breed them and with luck add to the growing population of this
wonderful breed. I decided that I wanted only two at first as they are so devoted
and NEED to be around their humans, it would not be fair to them if they could not share our home.
Our home was only large enough for two children so given their size; two American
mastiffs would fit comfortably (our children grew up and moved out) in our home.
We added Pearl the Fawn after a summer long remodeling job to give our guy and girls
their own personal room, for the most part they still have run of our home but in our
absence we felt it better to have a place they would be dry, warm (or cool) depending
on the seasons, and most important; safe. Our Pearl is so tall she wakes me in the
morning with a cold nose in my ear to let me know its time to let her out. Then in
2005 we adopted Moon and as you can see at only 10 months old I am thinking I should
have named him Moose. He is 34” tall at the shortest part of his back and a solid 158
pounds. When he comes in the house he walks straight for the couch and sits down, butt
on the couch feet on the floor….I think I can almost see a smile out of him when Bill
walks in the house and tells him “off the couch Moon”, you see he always sits in Bills’ spot.
We are not a kennel, but we are approved American Mastiff breeders. With some luck
we will have a litter to offer for sale once a year to pre-approved homes only,
as we are a devoted member of the AMBC (American Mastiff Breeders Council). Our main
goal is to protect this wonderful breed. You can check out the puppy link at the left
to see if we have puppies available or are expecting soon. Drop me a line if you have
questions.
